What Are The Different Types of Therapy by Oliver C. Stone

Looking at the different types of therapy, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is the right fit for your situation. Let’s go over the different types and why people choose each kind. Better Together Mental Health offers four types of therapy. These are individual, couples, family, and group therapy. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Individual Therapy is what most people think of when they start considering therapy. It can be helpful with a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, life changes, building life skills, self-reflection, changing habits, and more. There are many different approaches to individual therapy and it isn’t uncommon for individual therapists to specialize in different methodologies or topics. If you’re regularly experiencing emotional distress or feel as if an issue is too difficult or too complex to handle alone, it may be a good idea to start looking into therapy.

Group Therapy serves a different purpose than individual therapy typically would. Rather than focusing on one person, their concerns, and their goals, there is instead a group typically of three to eight people who all share similar goals. As the group progresses, the interactions that the group has with each other help them to grow together while still having guidance and input from a therapist.

Couples or relationship therapy primarily focuses on the relationship between romantic partners. While there are different approaches, a major focus of couples therapy is improving communication and connection between partners. Relationship therapy is often considered more difficult due to the higher emotions that can come from having two people actively involved in the therapy process.

Family Therapy has some similarities to relationship therapy, in that they involve multiple people and have a focus on the relationship between them. However, that’s where the similarities end. Family therapy looks to address dynamics between family members to reduce stress and resolve unhealthy patterns.

Each type of therapy has its own benefits and drawbacks. Sometimes people will need to do multiple types of therapy at the same time. At Better Together Mental Health, we’ll discuss and see which type of therapy is the best fit for you. If any of these sound like something you need, contact us today!
